Three dead in passenger van crash in Atka in Aleutian Island chain

Troopers will be traveling to the remote village on Wednesday to continue the investigation.

The names of the injured and deceased is being withheld at this time, pending notification of their families.

Atka is a fishing village of 68 people located 1,200 miles southwest of Anchorage and 350 miles west of Unalaska.

Troopers say the van was carrying nine people in the village of Atka (AT-kah) when it crashed.

Several others in the van were injured. They were transported to Adak (AY-dak) on a nearby island and were to be flown Wednesday to Anchorage.

The Aleutian Pribilof Island Community Development Association (APICDA) issued a statement late Tuesday evening, stating the victims of the crash were all employees of Atka Pride Seafoods.

Troopers said Wednesday that they did not know the extent of the injuries suffered by the survivors. They identified the three men killed as 43-year-old Ray McCullough Jr., 51-year-old Mike Tunohun and 57-year-old Paul Nicholas Nesbit.

Driver charged with manslaughter, assault, DUI for rollover crash that killed 3

Alaska State Troopers have identified the driver as 28-year-old Sonny Iloilo. An arrest warrant has been issued for Iloilo on manslaughter, first degree assault and driving under the influence, troopers wrote in a Monday dispatch.

“Speed, impairment of the driver and not utilizing seatbelts are factors in the fatal collision,” troopers wrote.
