Bystanders pull man from burning vehicle.

Bystanders pulled a man from a vehicle engulfed in flames in Tucson early Saturday morning.

Bystanders pulled a man from a vehicle engulfed in flames in Tucson early Saturday morning.

The 22-year-old man was a passenger in a car driven by another man who was killed in the two-car crash, police said.

Police said firefighters responded to the scene near 6th Avenue and Illinois just before 2 a.m. Saturday.

The man who was rescued was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said the 28-year-old driver of the other vehicle has been hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. A 24-year-old male passenger in that car suffered only minor injuries.

Investigators said it appears the vehicle that caught fire was rear-ended when it turned southbound onto 6th Avenue.

The car that rear-ended the vehicle continued across the northbound lanes, jumped the curb, hit the bus bench canopy on the east side of the street, continued into a dirt lot and into a chain link fence, police said.

Officers said speed, alcohol and possibly drugs appear to have been factors in the incident.

Detectives said they determined that the driver of the vehicle that rear-ended the other one was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the collision.

He was identified as 28-year-old Juan M. Hernandez-Rodriguez. He was booked into the Pima County Jail on one count of second-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault, one count of endangerment and one count of felony criminal damage.
