Two drivers were injured Tuesday night in a head-on collision on state Route 94 near Dulzura, and one was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol said. The crash occurred about 7:50 p.m. west of Honey Springs Road. Both lanes of Route 94 were closed for a short time during the investigation. The driver who was arrested was identified by the CHP as Luis Sanchez, 23, of El Cajon. He was driving a 2002 Ford Ranger eastbound on Route 94 when his pickup crossed the solid double-yellow lines and hit a westbound 2009 Chevrolet Equinox SUV driven by a 51-year-old Jamul man, a CHP officer said. The SUV traveled about 100 feet down an embankment. The Ranger came to rest in both the eastbound and westbound lanes. Both men were trapped and had to be extricated by firefighters. Both were wearing seat belts, and air bags deployed in both vehicles, the officer said. The SUV was traveling about 50 mph. The pickup was traveling at an undetermined speed, the officer said. Both drivers were transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. Sanchez was taken by ambulance with moderate to serious injuries.
