Woman killed in crash of robbery suspect's car
A woman died when she was ejected from a car fleeing from a robbery in San Leandro, police said Saturday.
The incident began about 8:50 p.m. Friday when a man tried to buy an item at the Radio Shack at 1359 Washington Ave. with counterfeit money, San Leandro police said.
When the store clerk confronted the man, the suspect "threatened to harm him and fled the store with the stolen item," police said.
The clerk called police, and an officer spotted a car leaving the store parking lot onto Davis Street. The car sped off, leading the officer on a high-speed chase, authorities said.
The driver turned north onto San Leandro Boulevard and sped off, and the officer lost sight of the car and stopped chasing it, police said.
A short time later, police realized that the car had crashed into a building on San Leandro Boulevard at Apricot Street. Officers found a woman who had been ejected from the car and was unresponsive. They performed CPR, but she died at the scene.
It was not clear whether she had been driving the car or was a passenger, police said.
The robbery suspect was also ejected from the car and was taken to a hospital for his injuries. He is in police custody on suspicion of robbery and murder.
Their names weren't released.
