53-year-old man killed, after his car rear-ends the flatbed trailer of a truck on Highway 1 near Lompoc.

A 53-year-old Lompoc man was killed in a rear-end collision Thursday night along Highway 1, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident happened around 8:48 p.m., just south of Highway 135.

Officers say the driver of a truck pulling a flatbed trailer was headed southbound on Highway 1 at speeds between 35 and 45 miles per hour when the Lompoc man, driving a silver Mercedes, slammed into the rear end of the truck at an unsafe rate of speed.

The Mercedes became trapped underneath the trailer, the CHP said.

The Lompoc man, whose name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin, suffered fatal injuries.
