The driver of a Ford F-350 pickup truck was heading southbound on Highway 2 when they traveled off the right side of the road, onto the shoulder and into the northbound lanes of traffic. The pickup collided head-on with the officer’s unmarked Ford Explorer and the driver’s side of a Kia Soul.

In court, the deputy district attorney said Rosales-Cano's blood alcohol content was .294, three times the legal limit. She also said he had at least one prior DUI conviction and was considered a flight risk, yet she did not ask for his bond to be increased from the scheduled $20,000.
