CSP was on the scene responding to the first incident when Renfro was hit. US 285 was closed for hours after the accident, which happened during a winter storm that left roads throughout the state closed due to icy conditions and blowing snow.

The SUV that hit Renfro was driven by Blair Gledhill, 22, a Denver resident who was hospitalized with minor injuries. Samual Yesurantnam, 46, of Conifer, also stopped to help and was hit by the SUV.

Coloradans are continuing to show support for a law enforcement official who was killed early January attempting to direct traffic following an accident. A fundraiser was held for Sergeant Sean Renfro in Pine Junction Saturday afternoon.
An off-duty Jefferson County Sheriff's Department sergeant was hit and killed while assisting at the site of a multi-vehicle crash, north of Conifer on U.S. 285. Sgt. Sean Renfro was directing traffic when he was killed. The initial crash happened when the driver of a Mitsubishi SUV lost control and exited the southbound side of the road. Then two people in a truck stopped to assist the driver of the SUV, when their truck was rear-ended by a sedan. Troopers were investigating these crashes when an SUV lost control and crossed the roadway, hitting the off-duty deputy and another man who were standing in front of the truck. Renfro was pronounced deceased at the crash site.
