Coloradans are continuing to show support for a law enforcement official who was killed early January attempting to direct traffic following an accident. A fundraiser was held for Sergeant Sean Renfro in Pine Junction Saturday afternoon.
An off-duty Jefferson County Sheriff's Department sergeant was hit and killed while assisting at the site of a multi-vehicle crash, north of Conifer on U.S. 285. Sgt. Sean Renfro was directing traffic when he was killed. The initial crash happened when the driver of a Mitsubishi SUV lost control and exited the southbound side of the road. Then two people in a truck stopped to assist the driver of the SUV, when their truck was rear-ended by a sedan. Troopers were investigating these crashes when an SUV lost control and crossed the roadway, hitting the off-duty deputy and another man who were standing in front of the truck. Renfro was pronounced deceased at the crash site.
Why every fatality from a crash is not legally a wrongful death
After someone dies in a motor-vehicle accident, grieving family members and friends are often left with many questions. What caused the accident? Could it have been avoided? What do they do now that their loved one is gone?
Sometimes a fatal collision happens through no one's fault. Crashes caused by weather and road conditions, or by wildlife in the roadway, are examples. But when a fatal crash is caused by negligence, then family members should pursue a wrongful death claim, to uphold the victim's rights and begin the financial recovery process.
