Doyle Harrison, 61, William Bailey, 67, Miguel Angel Lamas Arrellano, 24, and Stanley Politano, 69, killed in semi truck crash on Interstate 70 in Lakewood, Colorado

As of 10:30 p.m. CT, Colorado officials said the crash involved 12 cars and three semis, but also said that number could change. One semi was carrying wood, one was a gravel hauler and the third was possibly carrying mattresses.

The video, from Burger Planet on YouTube, appears to show the speeding semi passing stopped vehicles. The camera is then turned to show a large smoke plume rising from where I-70 goes under Denver West Colorado Mills Parkway.

The driver was taken into custody on “multiple vehicular homicide” charges, police said.

The runaway semi hit several cars and trucks in Lakewood on Thursday, igniting a fiery crash. Twenty-eight vehicles were involved in the pileup: four of them semis and 24 cars, Lakewood Police Department Agent Ty Countryman told reporters.

According to an arrest affidavit, a couple traveling on I-70 eastbound near the Lookout Mountain exit saw the speeding semi and followed it. Investigators say the couple their cellphones to record video of the semi near the Genesee exit, noticing a trail of fluid from the rear of the truck.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says the company has had 19 inspections since the Fall of 2017 to as recently as March of this year, with 30 violations. Ten of those violations are for a form of brake issue.

Some people in the courtroom broke out in tears as video of the crash scene was played. A police officer quoted the defendant as saying he “thought he was going to die” and that the collision was “like a bomb.”

Aguilera-Mederos’ attorney, Rob Corry, requested a 30-day continuance on Thursday, but prosecutors argued there has been plenty of time. Jefferson County District Court Judge Christopher Zensek agreed and denied the request.
