According to police sources, an officer was in the process of initiating a traffic stop just before 5:30 a.m. As he exited his cruiser and began walking towards the other vehicle, the driver suddenly hit the gas and sped off.
Officers came upon the vehicle a short distance away, near Foxbriar Lane, to find it had broadsided a tree.

The accident is being reconstructed by the Mid-State Accident Reconstruction Unit and is being investigated by the Rocky Hill Police Department.

The driver, Nelson Viera, 27, of East Hartford has a record of previous arrests, and had a pending case from April in which he was released on bond. There is also an additional pending case and several previous arrests for Viera, according to Lt. Robert Catania.
