Sheriff deputy Christopher Taylor, 23, killed when struck by alleged DUI driver Cassandra Smith, 30, on I-75 in Charlotte County, Florida

30-year-old Cassandra Smith from Lakeville, Massachusetts, was driving north on I-75 when she lost control of her Jeep, crossed over lanes and went onto the paved shoulder. She hit the deputy’s vehicle, which hit him, the driver of the Honda and the Honda itself.

Cassandra Smith, of Lakeville, Massachusetts, faced Judge Geoffrey Gentile on Thursday morning after a crash that killed 23-year-old Deputy Christopher Taylor during a traffic stop.

Shelly Walton said Backstreets Bar is collecting donations. All those funds will go right to Christopher Taylor’s mom and family.

23-year-old Christopher Taylor will be honored Wednesday morning at 10 at the Babcock Ranch field house. The public is welcome but parking is limited. 

An attorney who looked over the case—Lance Dunford of the Scott T. Moorey law firm—says the judge overseeing Friday’s hearing will either issue a bond or keep Smith in the same status she is in right now.
