Buchholz student succumbs to crash injuries

Alachua County Schools also dispatched a team of grief counselors to help students and staff cope with the loss, Buchholz Asst. Principal Jared Taber said. “We wanted to make sure any time a student needs to speak with someone, they’re there,’’ Taber said, later adding, “We’ve had an open door policy since the beginning of the school year and that’s what we’ll continue.”

Bassett was a junior at Bucholz High School in Gainesville and swam for High Tide Aquatics. She was  a state qualifier in Florida for the 2014-2015 State Championship meet.

Sources confirm Bassett had a promising career as a swimmer - she was recently ranked 36th in the state by college swimming.com.
Christie Bassett, 16, died from injuries sustained in a crash on the southbound ramp of I-75 at Northwest 39th Avenue in Gainesville. Florida Highway Patrol troopers say Bassett was driving a 1997 Honda CR-V when the SUV swerved onto a sloped grass shoulder, traveling about 600 feet into a patch of woods, where it struck a large tree. The teenager was not wearing a seatbelt and had to be extricated from the SUV before she was was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital with critical injuries. She later succumbed to her injuries late Sunday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
