The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is trying to figure out the cause of a crash that killed a 20-year-old man in Northwest Jacksonville early Tuesday morning.

Officers responded to a report of a crash on Fifth Avenue near Soutel Drive about 1:45 a.m.

Police said Yancey Hairston was driving northeast on Belvedere Street and tried to make a left turn onto Fifth Avenue. Police said he failed to negotiate the turn, and the front of the car struck a culvert in a ditch and overturned.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the sports coupe flipped over with Hairston pinned underneath, according to police. Officers said it appeared Hairston was ejected from the car before the car turned on top of him. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt.

Jacksonville Fire-Rescue responded and was able to lift the vehicle off of Hairston, but he died at the scene, according to JSO.
