State troopers have identified the woman killed and teenager critically injured Friday night when they was struck by a car while crossing San Jose Boulevard in Mandarin.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 57-year-old Esther Benzohar Ohayon and her daughter were trying to cross at Haley Road about 8 p.m. The 16-year-old, Orly Ohayon, was transported to UF Health at Jacksonville in critical condition.

Troopers say Michael Fortunato was driving his 2000 Toyota Camry south on San Jose Boulevard in the center lane as the two pedestrians were in a crosswalk headed toward the Etz Chaim Synagogue.

According to troopers, Fortunato attempted to avoid hitting the two, but was unsuccessful as the front of his Camry struck both pedestrians.

Ohayon died at the scene.

Troopers are still investigating whether the light for Fortunato was red or green when he went through the intersection and the outcome of blood alcohol testing. FHP said charges are pending at this time.

San Jose was closed for four and a half hours as authorities investigated and cleared the crash.
