Search crews have recovered the bodies of a man and a woman from the wreckage of a small plane that went down in the water near Destin on the Florida Panhandle. In a news release, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office says the plane went down Thursday evening about half a mile off Henderson Beach. Official say a small plane crashed off the coast of Destin on the Florida Panhandle, and a search is underway. The Coast Guard, firefighters, and Okaloosa County and Walton County sheriff’s departments are searching the area.

Dispatchers later received a 911 call from a man who reported seeing a small prop plane go down near Henderson Beach, the sheriff’s office said. Search crews found the body of the woman in the water around 9 p.m. and the body of the man about 45 minutes later, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities have not released their names or hometowns.

Alvin man, woman killed in small plane crash near Florida

A man and woman from Alvin were killed when a small plane they were in crashed into the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida Panhandle, officials said Friday.Pilot James Shumberg, 67, and passenger Sheryl Roe, 60, are believed to have been the only people on board the Piper Archer aircraft. Those who knew Dr. Roe said she will be greatly missed.  They said there aren't enough words to describe the kind of woman she was but did say the mother of five was the kind of person you wanted in your life.

Preliminary Report on Destin Plane Crash Released

The pilot radioed that he “missed the approach” and was circling around to attempt a second landing.  Radar imagery at that time shows that the plane instead made a turn to the south and flew out over the Gulf of Mexico. A witness jogging on the beach reported that the plane’s front end was illuminated as if the engine was “on fire”.
