U.C.F. professor Dr. Bill Safranek, Wendymary Artiles, 22, killed, Jarison Rodriguez, 27, critically injured after two car crash on State Road 520 in Brevard County.
UCF professor killed in crash.
A University of Central Florida professor was killed Monday night in a two-vehicle crash in Brevard County, school officials said.
Dr. Bill Safranek, an assistant professor in UCF’s Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, died in the crash, which occurred near State Road 520 and State Road 524 in Cocoa.
A woman identified as Wendymary Artiles, 22, of Apopka, also died in the crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. She was a passenger in the other vehicle.
Troopers said a man driving an F-150 was heading eastbound on S.R. 520 when he attempted to turn left onto S.R. 524. The FHP has not identified the driver, but it's believed that Safranek was behind the wheel.
Jarison Rodriguez, 27, who was driving the other vehicle, veered to the right to avoid the truck but struck the front left of it, causing the pickup to overturn before it struck a road sign and a stop sign and ignited, the FHP said.
Rodriguez's vehicle overturned on its left side, ejecting Artiles from the vehicle, according to troopers. She was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where she died, the FHP said.
Rodriguez was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.
