Clearwater cyclist seriously injured in crash.
A cyclist was seriously injured when several bicycles in a caravan crashed Sunday.
A caravan of about 30 cyclists with the Suncoast Cycling Club were nearing the end of 57-mile ride when the accident occurred shortly after noon, Pinellas deputies said. The riders were headed north on County Road 1 just north of Michigan Boulevard when a bike ridden by Roberto Singson, 53, of 2053 Diplomat Drive in Clearwater clipped the back tire of a rider in front of him.
Singson had lost control of his bike and was thrown to the ground, deputies said. As a result, two other cyclists, James Poitras, 60, of Oldsmar and John Burchfield, 55, also of Oldsmar, riding close by, also crashed.
Singson was flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg to receive treatment for head trauma. Poitras was taken by ambulance to Mease Countryside Hospital to be treated for a broken right clavicle. Burchfield was treated on the scene for minor scratches and abrasions.
The accident remains under investigation.
