Teen boy killed in crash darted into path of Kissimmee truck driver, deputies say

He was walking to school, Lake Region High, in the Eagle Lake community when he crossed southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 17 south of County Road 540, also known as Winter Lake Road, without using nearby crosswalks, deputies say.

The boy's parents have been notified and are on the scene, along with chaplains from PCSO.

Codey Means started school at Lake Region High in August, but already had a reputation as a good friend and a gentleman.

"These drivers did everything they could to avoid hitting him," said Polk Sheriff's Office spokesperson Carrie Horstman.

A male 15-year-old Lake Region High School student was walking on U.S. Highway 17 near near Winter Lake Road when he was apparently struck and killed by a vehicle. Codey Robert Means attempted to cross the highway at around 6:10 a.m. outside of a crosswalk when he was struck by a silver pickup truck driven by Juan Camacho, 48. Camacho veered right in an attempt to avoid the boy, but the driver's side of the vehicle struck him. Means was then struck by two additional vehicles, a maroon 2-door driven by Taunja Moore, 48, and a white pickup driven by Gregory Crather, 55. All three drivers, along with other passersby, stopped and attempted to render aid to the boy, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
