A deputy pilot with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has been suspended and an investigation is underway after a speeding Camaro barreled down a runway and crashed into airport antennas

A Hillsborough County volunteer deputy was with the pilot in the volunteer's car when it lost control on a Tampa Executive Airport runway and drove into the antennas of the Instrument Landing System on Saturday, according to a HCSO report.

The volunteer, William Nelson, was driving the car, his own personal 2013 Chevrolet Camaro.

According to the HCSO report, Nelson and the pilot, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Deputy Paul Rogers, are both assigned to the sheriff's office aviation section and were going to do a routine perimeter check at the airport.

HCSO investigators reported that during the check, and without any apparent reason, the Chevy got on the main runway. It was going fast towards the southwest end when it lost control and hit the antennas.

Neither the driver nor the pilot were injured, but the ILS was damaged so badly it was rendered inoperable, deputies said. The runway was closed for some time but the antennas didn't work all day Saturday.

The Tampa Executive is operated by the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority. The Federal Aviation Authority and HCAA were notified and the sheriff's office launched a criminal and administrative investigation. Rogers is suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. He could face administrative charges.

Nelson, who is a retired sheriff's office sergeant, was removed from his duties and could face possible criminal charges, HCSO deputies said.

"There is nothing that would indicate that they should have been on the runway for any reason. Or in a personal vehicle," said Sheriff's Office Colonel Jim Previtera, who oversees the aviation unit.

"The sheriff's office is treating this situation with the appropriate gravity. We've initiated both internal and criminal investigations. And we're cooperating right now with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Hillsborough Aviation Authority to determine what exactly took place out there and take whatever action is deemed necessary."
