The tests showed Edward Jose Duran had a blood-alcohol content of 0.21, nearly three times the legal level, the Florida Highway Patrol said. In Florida, a driver is considered intoxicated at 0.08.
The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the driver who was killed early Friday in the third wrong-way crash on Interstate 275 this year. The wrong-way driver was Edward Jose Duran, 23, of Green Ridge Drive in Tampa, the FHP said Saturday. Investigators said Duran was driving his 1997 Honda Accord about 2:44 a.m. the wrong way against southbound traffic on the highway near downtown and struck an ambulance with two attendants but no patients. Duran died at the scene and the two people in the ambulance suffered minor injuries. FHP says Duran was probably under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as were the two previous wrong-way drivers earlier this year. Blood tests are pending. Duran, who was not carrying any identification, had started driving the wrong way on the interstate minutes before the fatal crash, FHP said. Drivers called 911. Duran crashed just north of Floribraska Avenue. The crash remains under investigation.
