Man dies early Sunday after crash into canal(link is external)

The vehicle failed to stop at the intersection of Walker Street and crashed through the sidewalk fencing and landed in the Augusta Canal. The accident happened about 3:30 a.m. at 10th and Walker streets, Bowen said. Jones was a passenger in a Ford F-150 pickup traveling south on 10th Street. Jones, a passenger in the vehicle, was able to get out, but then collapsed in the water. According to a statement released by Coroner Mark Bowen, the victim was identified as John Jones Jr.

A 22-year-old Beech Island man died after a traffic accident early Sunday in which a pickup ended up in the Augusta Canal. The driver, Jose Rojas, 25, of Beech Island, was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center, Richmond County sheriff'€™s Lt. The truck failed to stop at the Walker Street intersection, crashed through the sidewalk fencing and landed in the canal. He was subsequently released and charged with homicide by vehicle in the first degree, DUI, reckless driving, failure to stop at a stop sign and driving while unlicensed.
