A local man was killed Thursday night after he walked into traffic on North Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

The report says that Eli French, 62, of 214 E. Lester St., Americus, was walking east across MLK when he was struck by a 2012 Honda Accord driven by Eduardo Daniel Cortez, 23, of 105 Jasmine Drive, Americus.

The accident happened at 8:30 near Adderton Street and MLK Blvd., near the intersection of U.S. 19 and Georgia Highway 30.
Eli French was walking across MLK Boulevard at about 8:30 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle and critically injured. He was transported to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center where he later died. The accident is still under investigation.
