A Macclenny man struck and killed in Charlton County near the state line early Tuesday was apparently trying to help a truck driver whose rig was off the side of the road, the Georgia State Patrol said.
Because it resulted in a fatality, a State Patrol specialized collision reconstruction team is investigating. The scene was so close to the state line that it was originally reported to the State Patrol by officers from the Florida agricultural inspection station just across the St. A Freightliner tractor-trailer was on the side of Georgia 121 at Georgia 185 when some people came to help, Trooper 1st Class Ray Strickland said in his preliminary report. Waters died, and the driver of the Freightliner, 45-year-old Rhonda Shubert, was transported to Ed Fraser Memorial Hospital in Macclenny, the report said.
