Georgia football player, 16, killed by hit-and-run driver while tending to injured dog

According to police, Samuel Johnson Jr., 16, was walking about 6:15 p.m. Saturday evening on Inner Perimeter Road, in Valdosta, when he spotted a dog that had been struck by a vehicle. Authorities say, as he was tending to the dog, he was struck and killed by an unknown vehicle. And the driver of the vehicle did not stop.

While walking along the road near the Valdosta Performing Arts Center Saturday, Dec. 9, at about 6:15 p.m., 16-year-old Samuel Johnson Jr. noticed a dog was hit by a passing car, according to a Dec. 11 Valdosta Police Department news release. Seeing the dog was injured, Johnson then tried rescuing the dog from the road, police said.
