Kauai County has identified the pilot and passenger killed in Tuesday’s light sport aircraft crash in Waiakamoo Valley in Polihale.

The ultralight crash on Kauai on Tuesday, March 11, that killed both pilot and passenger, isn’t the first for owner Birds in Paradise. The company was sued more than four years ago. In August 2009, Neil Shoemaker suffered serious leg injuries when the ultralight he was in crashed.

Rescue officials have responded to an ultralight crash in Kokee. Preliminary reports state an Evolution Trikes Revo weight-shift-control aircraft crashed under unknown circumstances on the side of a mountain near Polihale Beach around 9 a.m. Tuesday. Kauai police were notified of a fire, and upon investigation realized the fire was a result of an ultralight crash. Firefighters from the Waimea fire station are on scene. The identity of the victims are unknown at this time. Local authorities are reporting that both people on board were killed. The pilot was later identified as Gerry Charlebois, 54. His passenger has been identified as Mark McKenzie, 53, from Ontario Canada.
