A 22-year-old man was critically injured by a power line felled by lightning in Kailua on Sunday as a thunderstorm drenched Oahu.

The National Weather Service says the bad weather brought down a power line in Kailua. It happened around 9:30 Sunday morning and a young man was injured. The 22-year-old saw his van on fire and tried to put the fire out. That's when trouble began. The quiet of a Sunday morning on Ohana Avenue was shattered when residents heard a loud explosion. A power line split both ends of the live wire which caused considerable damage. Fortunately, he was not. The young man was taken to Castle Medical Center in critical condition and was later transferred to Queen's. The injured man remains in Queen's hospital Sunday night in critical condition, but his life may have been saved by the people living on Ohana Street in Kailua. HECO continues its investigation as to how the power line was separated.
