A woman has died after a car crashed into a traffic signal pole in Lahaina.
The crash happened at about 1:45 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Honoapiilani Highway and Shaw Street.
According to Maui police, a 30-year-old Lahaina man was driving in the northbound direction on the highway when he struck a pole. The car continued through the intersection and collided into a second traffic signal pole where the car came to rest.
The driver was taken to the hospital for serious injuries.
A passenger, the woman in her mid 20s, was taken to the hospital where she later died.
Police say the car was equipped with automatic retracted shoulder belts which were used but they were not wearing the lap belts. The car was not equipped with airbags.
According to police, speed may have been a factor in this crash. The use of alcohol and drugs are pending toxicology results.
This is Maui County’s third fatality for 2014 as compared to two at the same time last year. This was the second fatality in the month.
