Police say the victim was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The involvement of drugs and alcohol have not yet been determined. The investigation is still pending.

The incident was reported at around 1:09 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30, on Olinda Road north of Kehau Place in Makawao

This is the 21st traffic fatality on Maui, compared to 15 at the same time last year.

The involvement of drugs and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.

A 36-year-old man was riding a moped on Olinda Road in Makawao when he was struck by a pickup truck and sustained life-threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The pickup driver was not injured. On December 18, 2014, the victim, identified as Alika Kapuaala, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
