Mother, three children die in Vandalia train crash

In a statement Friday, Vandalia Mayor Ricky J. Gottman wrote, “First and foremost, the City of Vandalia extends its prayers and condolences to the family involved in the accident. We cannot begin to the fathom the pain and anguish they have during their time of mourning those they have lost and the strength they must also undertake as they stand beside those injured. We also pray for the witnesses, first responders, train engineer(s), and the citizens of the Cities of Greenville, IL and Vandalia, IL, that they may find peace as they begin to process the events of last evening.”

Train hits SUV near parade, killing 3

Ray says the accident occurred just minutes before the start of the city's Halloween Parade, which went ahead as planned. 

An accident involving an SUV and a train has killed four people in Vandalia, Illinois on Thursday.Witnesses said the crossing guards were down at Sixth and Main streets, but they didn’t block traffic from the road the family's vehicle was traveling on last night. Alyssa Sewell, 18, Drake Wisnasky, 13 and Abby Wisnasky, 10, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their mother, the driver, Crystal Anna, 35, was taken to an area hospital by medical airlift. She was pronounced dead on Friday. A fourth sibling, Dylan Wisnasky, 9, was injured in the crash and is expected to survive.The family was on the way to a Halloween parade.
