Mazza was speeding in a turbocharged Dodge Neon southbound on Bell Road when he lost control about 6:30 p.m., south of 143rd Street and about a quarter-mile north of Martindale Lane, police spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.
Hoffmeyer said the car rolled over several times before hitting the pole.
Several people, including a sheriff’s police officer, saw the crash and stopped to help but could not get near the car, Hoffmeyer said.
“He was going at a very high rate of speed,” she said. “(The car) broke the pole; the vehicle immediately ignited.”
