Zaiemunnisa Khan, 61, killed in car crash with train near Arlington Heights, Illinois

Extensive delays have been reported on Metra's Union Pacific-Northwest line after a person was killed in a collision between a train and a vehicle near Arlington Heights, officials said.Inbound train #646 struck the vehicle around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, officials said. Although trains in both directions have started moving again, they are utilizing one track near the area, causing extensive delays.

Arlington Heights police are still investigating why Zaiemunnisa Khan, 61, drove her 2009 Honda Element under the crossing gate arm and up onto the tracks. Khan's vehicle burst into flames when it was struck and was then pushed by the train around 1,000 feet until the train came to a stop. The Cook County medical examiner's office has determined the Rolling Meadows woman who drove her SUV in front of an inbound Metra train in Arlington Heights Thursday afternoon was killed from the impact of the train hitting her vehicle and not from the ensuing fire. Whowell said witnesses reported that Khan had turned from Northwest Highway and was heading west on Euclid Avenue when her vehicle was hit by the inbound Metra train. "We are trying to pinpoint what her destination was, what she was doing before the crash," Deputy Police Chief Andy Whowell said.
