Passenger killed in crash when car strikes tree.

A man was killed in a crash in the Gage Park neighborhood on the South Side early Saturday.

Just before 2 a.m., a 19-year-old man was sitting in the passenger seat of vehicle travelling south on Western Avenue near 50th Street when the vehicle struck a tree, said police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer, citing preliminary information.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene, the man was found unresponsive, Greer said.

He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The man’s name was withheld Saturday morning pending notification of family.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into police custody, but no charges have been filed, police said.

It was not immediately known if drugs or alcohol factored in the crash.
