An Indiana semi-truck driver involved in a crash that killed five people in northern Illinois has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Illinois State Police is reporting four people were killed in an accident on Interstate 55 involving at least one semi-trailer truck and three autos south of Chicago in Will County.
The fatal accident Monday afternoon occurred on I-55 near Arsenal Road in Elwood.
Emergency crews have responded, prompting the rerouting of traffic off the northbound lanes at River Road. An Illinois Department of Transportation spokeswoman says the interstate is expected to be closed at that point for hours.
Also, a second accident a short distance away near Channahon in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 is also affecting traffic. Police have diverted southbound traffic at Route 6, and traffic on I-80 is not being allowed to exit onto the southbound lanes of I-55.
Traffic is backed up for miles.
