One vehicle was traveling south on Illinois 4 just north of Old State Route 4 while another vehicle was going north when for unknown reasons, the southbound vehicle crossed the centerline and caused a head-on collision at 3:44 a.m., according to preliminary information gathered by Illinois State Police.

For unknown reasons, Bowles crossed into the path of a 2017 Gray Ford Escape driven by Morton that was headed northbound.
