LaOtto man totals airplane in DeKalb County crash

Jeffrey M. Hoffman, the sole occupant of the plane, said he was trying to land in the field, but he was unable to see a tree that was in the way because the sun was in his eyes, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. He struck the tree with the wing of the 2020 CubCrafters CCX 200, causing the nose of the plane to strike the ground.

At approximately 5:34 p.m., the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office learned of a plane that crashed in a field in the 100 block of County Road 68 and found the wreckage just northwest of State Road 3 and County Road 68.

Flightaware.com says the flight took off from Kendallville Municipal Airport about 24 minutes prior to the crash landing.
