Madison County saw 48 hit-and-runs in 2014, up from 34 in 2010. Leigh Ann Schattner's 26-year-old daughter, Keri Lynn Winningham, died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver last fall. Authorities and families of victims are calling for tougher penalties for drivers who flee accident scenes.

According to Detective Joel Sandefur, 58-year-old Ava L. Conley has been charged with leaving the scene of an accidental death. 
Police are looking for answers about the accident that killed Keri Winningham. She was struck by at least one car, driven by Christian Garrison; he stopped after the crash and is not facing charges. Police are investiagting what caused Winningham to be in the road in the first place.
