Officials say texting and driving was a factor in a fatal crash early Friday morning.

Officials say texting and driving was a factor in a fatal crash early Friday morning.

Emergency responders were called to a report of an accident to U.S. 40 east of the Manhattan road just after 5 a.m.

Reports show a Ford F-150 driven by Darrel Meaden, Jr., 30 of Brazil, was traveling east on U.S. 40 when the truck left the roadway.

The truck then struck an embankment and caused the vehicle to go airborne, roll and then struck a tree.

Meaden was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

One passenger was taken to the Putnam County Hospital and two more passengers were taken to St. Vincent Clay Hospital.

The passengers told authorities that Meaden was texting on his cell phone and missed the slight curve in the roadway.
