Despite flames and black smoke that rose into the sky and could be seen for miles, no one was killed in the crashes that happened in Iowa County, about a half-hour west of Iowa City, authorities said.

The State Patrol did not release any other names or conditions of the people involved in the crash, but authorities said two people at UIHC were in critical condition as of Friday night. Charges are pending in and the State Patrol is still investigating.
No one was killed in the crashes that happened in Iowa County, about a half-hour west of Iowa City, according to authorities. The crashes started around 3 p.m. when a semi driver from Portland, Oregon started the pileup by rear-ending an SUV driven by a Boone woman near mile marker 214. According to the report, Fedir Maftei, 59, ran into a an SUV driven by Andrea Haglund, 29, causing three additional vehicles to crash. Leroy Stevens, 30, and Keith Dickens, 50, were driving two other cars involved in the crash. The fifth vehicle in the accident was a tour bus driven by Kirby Weber, 27, of Des Moines. A dozen of those injured, including Maftei, were brought to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, two of which are in critical care and one was in the burn unit. According to officials, 11 others were taken to Marengo Memorial Hospital and six to eight others were brought to Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
