Four people were killed Saturday, including two Des Moines police officers, when a car driving the wrong way on the interstate struck the police car, authorities said.

Two officers, two others killed in fiery crash

Police said Officer Susan Farrell, 30, and Officer Carlos Puente-Morales, 34, died in the crash.

Des Moines Police said the names of the inmate and other driver killed in this crash are being withheld pending notification of their families. Both officers had just graduated from the police academy in October of 2015. The officers were transporting a inmate who was wanted on felony charges in Des Moines.

2 Iowa Police Officers Among 4 Killed in Wrong-Way Crash

Des Moines officers Susan Farrell and Carlos Puente-Morales, who had been on the job less than six months, were killed in the crash that occurred around 12:40 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 80 west of Des Moines, police spokesman Sgt. Paul Parizek said.

Also killed were a prison the officers were transporting and the driver of the other vehicle. Their names have not yet been released.

Beary's family released a statement through an attorney Monday following the announcement: "Our pain at losing Ben, a beloved son and brother, is multiplied by the knowledge that this collision brought so much grief to others."

Wrong-way driver had checkered record

"We know he would never intentionally cause this pain," Beary's family wrote. "We hope that the police are able to piece together what happened next. But whatever information they find will not diminish the pain we feel at losing Ben at a young age. Nor will it lessen the grief for the families of Susan Farrell, Carlos Puente-Morales, and Tosha Nicole Hyatt."

The Des Moines Register reports it has been a difficult time for the family of Carlos Puente-Morales, who died with officer Susan Farrell Saturday in a crash with a wrong-way driver.

The Rev. Joe Laughlin of Victory Church in Omaha, Nebraska, which Hyatt attended as a child, officiated.

Laughlin said Hyatt was loved by her friends and family.

The service for Hyatt was conducted by the Rev. Joe Laughlin, pastor at Victory Church in Omaha, which Hyatt attended as a child. He recalled having many conversations with her about God over the years.

Numerous questions remain about the accident, including whether Beary was intoxicated, how fast he was driving and how he wound up driving the wrong way on Interstate 80. Beary’s activities in the hours leading up to the crash also have been largely unknown.

Benjamin Beary's blood alcohol content after the March 26 crash on Interstate 80 west of Des Moines was 0.22, which is nearly three times the legal driving limit of 0.08, the Iowa Department of Public Safety said. Investigators determined that he was driving 102 mph when he struck the squad car and that he had recently used marijuana.

On Wednesday, state officials released new information in their ongoing investigation, revealing that Benjamin Edward Beary, 25, of Knoxville, was driving 102 miles per hour and had a blood-alcohol concentration of .223 percent, nearly three times the legal limit of .08 to be considered drunken driving.

The Iowa DOT says that footage in this video does not show the interstate ramp that a wrong-way driver took before a crash that killed four people, including two Des Moines Police officers. It does show footage of the accident.

Now, the officers’ families want the bar that served Beary to pay. They’ve filed wrongful death lawsuits against The Keg Stand in West Des Moines.

Since their deaths, questions have been raised about the safety of the interchange. Last month, the officers' families filed a wrongful death lawsuit against The Keg Stand in West Des Moines, where police say Beary was drinking before the crash.
