Man dies after falling off cliff at Red River Gorge

Rescuers say the victim jumped over the railing and rolled his ankle when he landed, which caused him to fall off of the cliff. The name of the victim has not been released, but we are told he is from out-of-state.

The man crossed a safety railing at Chimney Top Rock shortly before 10 a.m. and then leapt across an open space to the chimney, according to a Facebook post by Wolfe County Search and Rescue. He rolled an ankle when he landed; that, combined with his momentum, caused him to fall, according to the post. The rescue team retrieved the body 200 feet below. The Wolfe County coroner’s office said it would not release the man’s name until police could notify his family in Ohio, where he lived.

"He had jumped across and apparently rolled his ankle when he landed on the other side. That pitched him back and he fell off the right hand side of the cliff and that is about a 200 feet cliff line," John May, with Wolfe County Search and Rescue, told WKYT-TV.
