Community mourns woman killed crossing near 2nd Street Bridge

A tragic accident during the morning commute Thursday has families across the Metro grieving. Family, friends and even strangers consoled one another on social media when they discovered Ryann Tewell, 24, died trying to cross Second Street at the foot of the Clark Memorial Bridge.

The woman killed in the fatal accident on the Clark Memorial Bridge around 7:45 a.m. on Thursday has been identified.

Ryann M. Tewell, 24, lived in the 1400 block of Meadow Court near Lake Forrest.

She was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple blunt force injuries.

The bridge was shut down in both directions for several hours while police reconstructed the scene.

Police said a concrete truck was heading westbound on Main Street and made a right turn onto Second Street at the entrance of the bridge when the truck hit Tewell.

Officials said Tewell was dragged for several hundred yards before witnesses flagged the truck driver down.

"He didn't realize he'd struck her. He was flagged down by some other witnesses that saw it going on. He did stop. It doesn't appear he was trying to leave the scene. It's just a very unfortunate accident here," Dwight Mitchell, a Louisville Metro Police spokesman said.

The truck involved is owned by Advance Ready Mix

It's unknown just how this happened, but Joee Conroy, who works feet away from the site said this intersection has been problematic for some time for both motorists and pedestrians.

"Just getting to this area is an issue for them. Making this curve is an issue for them," Conroy said.

Conroy said trucks often have trouble making this sharp right turn and then are faced with low visibility.
