Identities released of passengers, drivers in I-71 crash

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. There is no update on the extent of the other persons’ injuries.

Woman killed in crash on I-71 identified

Officers are still investigating the cause of the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call the Oldham County Police Department at (502) 222-1300.

The identity of the woman who was killed in a crash on Interstate 71 that left four others injured has been released. According to Oldham County Police, a Chrysler van driven by Gus Malawi, 51, with six passengers, Omar Marhaba, 18, Rana Malawi, 48, Zarifa Malawi, 77, Jumana Alameddine, 58, Lina Marhaba, 45 and a 13-year-old girl, collided with a Freightliner semi truck driven Joshua Roth, 28, on I-71 near the 14 mile marker at approximately 9:07 p.m. Thursday. Zarifa Malawi died as a result of the crash. Four others in the van were injured, but police did not specify who was hurt or the extent of their injuries. Roth was not injured in the crash. Traffic was shut down in the southbound lands on I-71 at Exit 28 for several hours following the crash. No criminal charges are expected to be filed. Officers are still investigating the cause of the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call the Oldham County Police Department at (502) 222-1300.
