12-year-old boy killed in UTV crash on Calmes Road in St. Helena Parish, LA

A 12-year-old boy was killed in a utility terrain vehicle accident Saturday evening that also resulted in the arrest of the vehicle'€™s driver, according to the St. Helena Parish Sheriff'€™s Office. Deputies were called out at about 5:15 p.m. to Calmes Road where the boy was riding a UTV driven by Joshua Tharpe, 36, who had made a sharp turn on an area of wet sand and flipped the vehicle, killing the boy, said Joe Chaney, the Sheriff'€™s Office chief of detectives. A UTV is similar to an all-terrain vehicle, but typically larger. Tharpe was arrested on a count of vehicular homicide and has since been released on a $100,000 bond, Chaney said.
