11-year-old Baton Rouge girl killed in La. 1 wreck

The girl was riding in a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer that went off the road and rolled over after the driver lost control about 9 a.m., troopers said in a news release Tuesday.

An 11-year-old Baton Rouge girl was thrown from a car early Tuesday along La. 1 in Lafourche Parish and killed, Louisiana State Police reported.

The girl was riding in a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer that went off the road and rolled over after the driver lost control about 9 a.m., troopers said in a news release Tuesday.

The girl, who was not identified, was not wearing her seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office, troopers said.

She was in the car with her mother, Danielle McPherson, 31, 1120 N. Ardenwood Drive, Baton Rouge, who was in the front passenger seat. Two other children, who were not identified, were also passengers in the car, said Trooper Evan Harrell, State Police Troop C spokesman.

Troopers said the driver, Jermaine Wooden, 35, of Napoleonville, had been passing several vehicles in the northbound lane while headed southbound on two-lane La. 1. He was reentering the southbound lane when he lost control near Waverly Road in Thibodaux, troopers said.

Wooden, who was wearing his seat belt, received minor injuries and was taken to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center.

McPherson and the other two children in the car were wearing their seat belts and also were taken to Thibodaux Regional with minor injuries, troopers said.

Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash, troopers said. Blood was taken from Wooden for testing by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, troopers said.

Criminal traffic counts are pending in the crash, troopers said.
