A woman died and her husband was injured in a boating accident Tuesday on the lower Amite River, near Killian in southeast Livingston Parish, said a state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries spokesman.

The couple were identified late Tuesday as Richard Ledoux, 58, and Deborah Ledoux, 59, of Livingston, spokesman Adam Einck said.

Einck said wildlife and fisheries officials received a call at 6:30 p.m. reporting the accident. He said they are not sure who made the call, but they suspect it may have been the husband.

Einck said it is still very early in the investigation, but they suspect the husband was driving the couple’s 17-foot, aluminum shallow-draft boat, possibly searching for their turtle traps in the area, when they hit a tree about a mile away from Pete’s Landing.

Investigators do not know why they hit the tree or if they had been drinking, Einck said. Investigators are also unsure what time the accident occurred.

The couple, who were not thrown from the boat, both sustained trauma-type injuries, Einck said. Richard Ledoux was airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge while the body of Deborah Ledoux was turned over to the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office.
