When troopers questioned Bryant, he admitted his involvement in the crash.
Gerald Minnick, 22, Abbeville, died in the collision Saturday on La. 88 in Iberia Parish. Authorities arrested Virgil Bryant III, 24, New Iberia, hours after the crash. A preliminary investigation revealed that Minnick, in a Ford F-150 pickup truck, was traveling east on La. 88 around 6 p.m. Saturday when his vehicle crossed the westbound lane and collided with a BMW that was parked on the shoulder. After the crash, the Ford truck crashed into a utility pole and the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected. Minnick was pronounced deceased at the crash site. The silver BMW left the scene. About six hours later, troopers found an unoccupied silver 1999 BMW in a trailer park near the site of the crash. Troopers booked Bryant into the Iberia Parish Jail on counts of hit-and-run driving and no insurance.
