The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office has identified the man killed in a fatal collision early Sunday (March 16) on I-10 near the Irish Bayou exit, as Sheriff's Office Deputy Brunell A. Magee.

Magee, 35, was off-duty and traveling east on I-10 through eastern New Orleans when he lost control of his Dodge Intrepid. It veered over the median into westbound traffic and struck a vehicle driven by a 61-year-old man, according to police.

Magee was taken to Interim LSU Public Hospital, where he died.

The other driver is at the hospital and in stable condition.

The accident occurred at 6:45 a.m. Sunday. It is not known why the man lost control of the vehicle, police said, adding that blood and alcohol tests are under way.

The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
