The elderly couple struck and killed by a train in their pickup truck at a Keithville crossing have been identified.
According to the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office, 85-year-old Wilson Evans was at the wheel, and his wife Kathleen Evans, 79, was in the passenger seat when it happened around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
CPSO spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick says Evans was heading westbound in his Toyota pickup truck on Stagecoach Road when he went around the crossing arms that were down for the Union Pacific train. The crossing is equipped with flashing lights and gates, and crossbucks, and Chadwick says they were all in working order.
Chadwick says the truck was hit on the passenger side. Both victims, who lived nearby, were pronounced dead at the scene.
""Trains pretty much come through here pretty good, pretty fast," says Larry Black. Black says he lived close to the elderly couple.
"I think that maybe they had a medical emergency, I couldn't see them going around like that. He was a patient man...He wasn't very impatient," says Black.
The 58-car Union Pacific train was loaded with pipe and destined for Houston when it happened. The railroad freight company is also investigating. According to Union Pacific, the train had 58 cars and was carrying pipe. They said the crossing is equipped with flashing lights and gates and crossbucks.
Union Pacific says they are investigating the incident.
