Neighbor tried to help Natchitoches men in plane crash

It happened about 11 a.m. just west of Hwy. 1 in a soybean field about 300 yards behind houses in the Pan Am subdivision. The scene is within the Natchitoches city limits, just one mile north of the Hwy. 1 bypass.
A Natchitoches woman witnessed the plane crash Sunday morning that claimed the life of a local barber and sent a former city councilman to the hospital. Officials are not yet sure who was at the controls of a plane that crashed Sunday morning in South Natchitoches, but Gloria Young ran to the scene as she was on her way out to church. "We were getting ready to go to church when I heard this whistling," she said. "Then you heard a big boom like maybe not an explosion but like a gun. That's when Young said she and her neighbors took off running to see what happened. In the soy bean field just yards away from the Natchitoches Pan Am subdivision, they saw a small Cessna sky hawk plane had crashed. "And we asked if we could help and there was this one man and he was conscious, and I said, 'Are you OK?'" That man was later identified as former Natchitoches city councilman Jack McCain, Junior. He was airlifted to University Hospital in Shreveport. "And then I went around to the other side and I saw this man and it was just something that I'll never forget," she said. "I'll never forget that and sometimes I get emotional because I've never seen something like this before. This is the worst experience I've ever had in my life." Thaddeus T. Longlois, 83, a Natchitoches barber, was pronounced dead at the scene. It happened about 11 a.m. just west of Hwy. 1 in a soybean field about 300 yards behind houses in the Pan Am subdivision. The scene is within the Natchitoches city limits, just one mile north of the Hwy. 1 bypass. NPD Chief Micky Dove said McCain's condition is not known, but University Health Shreveport officials said a man from a plane crash in Natchitoches is in their emergency room being treated and evaluated. Right now, it's not clear if the blue and white Cessna Sky Hawk was taking off or landing. Just beyond trees at the edge of the field is the Natchitoches Regional Airport. Dove said the FAA and NTSB are launching a joint investigation into what happened to make the plane crash. He said that information will probably not be available for several days. Both men, Natchitoches residents, were found inside the plane. The investigation is ongoing.
