Gail Peterson, 65, killed, other driver, 58, seriously injured, after Peterson car crossed over into oncoming traffic lane on State Route 2 and is struck by another vehicle.

State police say one person was killed and another seriously hurt in a late night crash on Route 2 in Athol.

Police say a 65-year-old Gail Peterson of Athol was driving east at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when she lost control of her car, crossed into the westbound lane, struck the guard rail and came to a rest in the roadway.

Her car was then struck by a westbound car driven by a 58-year-old Holyoke man.

Peterson was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The Holyoke man was also hospitalized with what were described as serious injuries. His name was not released.

The crash remains under investigation.
