A commuter rail train heading through Fitchburg went off the tracks Tuesday night during the snowstorm.

Authorities said the 8 p.m. crash was caused by slippery conditions when the train was unable to stop.
About 40 people were on that train, but no serious injuries were reported.

The train was approaching the last stop when the crash occurred, it hit devices that are used to stop runaway trains and continued to move down the tracks
.
